Most people travel to Costa Rica to discover its wild, pristine nature. Since February 25th a ban on single-use plastic has gone into effect in all Costa Rican National Parks and Biological Reserves, which are spread out all over the country. Some also comprise Caribbean and Pacific beaches.

How does this impact your holiday in Costa Rica?

As a traveler, you need to take into account that no matter if you are going inland or to the beach, you will have to comply with this new directive when entering a protected area.
The prohibition includes following items, which you may sometimes use when on a holiday:

  • disposable plastic bottles and wrappers which are not part of the final product
  • disposable cups, fast-food containers, straws, stirrers
  • non-reusable plastic bags, plastic tableware, cutlery (plastic forks, knives, spoons)
These items can be confiscated when trying to enter with them into the national park or reserve.

What can you do?

If you have not done so already, this is the perfect time to invest in pretty containers and bottles which you can re-fill. In the end it will be a lot more economical too than having to buy new bottles all the time. Also a dry bag is always a good idea in climates with high humidity or when taking a boat, walking in the rain,…You can actually use these items anywhere, also at home. Several outdoor stores offer sustainable travel gear and gadgets. Feel free to contact us in case you have any questions.

Why is this directive implemented?

The goal is to sensitize and educate both visitors and local communities, as well as to encourage the use of more re-usable alternatives. However, it is not only about the products we use but also about how we decide to use them. Being a sustainable traveler is part of being a nice, responsible traveler.

Costa Rica has always been a beautiful place where we can admire the respect many locals have for their environment and the role the government plays in raising awareness. It is one of the main reasons I decided to specialize in custom made holidays in Costa Rica, though I have traveled to several other beautiful countries as well. Costa Rica can be a true example to other nations on how to protect their forests, wildlife, volcanoes and beaches. It is thanks to this type of actions that we can all keep falling in love with this stunning country. Why not go there and see for yourself?
