Heavy rains flood Costa Rica
While in Belgium we are enjoying an exceptionally dry and sunny summer, Costa Rica is facing extreme rainfall, even to rainy season standards. Especially on the Caribbean side of the country the situation is becoming very bad. People are cut off from civilization and have lost literally everything. Roads have disappeared under the mud or even completely collapsed which makes it difficult to get any kind of aid out there. Big trees have fallen down on small wooden houses. Electricity is out in several places and communication limited to non-existent. This makes it impossible at the moment to determine exactly how big the damage is. Locals in dryer areas are trying to organize logistics to get help to the affected villages. Aside from being very worried about the families, we are also concerned about wildlife, dogs and farm animals.
YŪGEN tours likes to support local initiatives by donating and by spreading the news. I believe climate change will affect all of us in the end and is everyone's responsibility, no matter where we live.
Help making a difference. With only 10 USD or EUR we can get basic supplies for several days like a food bag, hygene products, clothes, shoes etcetera. If you like more details about the donation process, please contact hello@yugentours.com. Having lived on the Caribbean side myself, I have local contacts who will happily use your donation to provide help to all life in need out there. Donations, however small, are highly appreciated.
These are some of the images that have been posted by locals in the area who were able to get online.
